The Value of an International School Education

Happy Asian and African American elementary students writing in their notebooks while having a class at school. Their classmates are in the background.

In Chiang Mai, the array of choices for an international school has never been more extensive or diverse, with a growing number of parents opting for an international education for their children. As our global community becomes increasingly interconnected, placing a significant emphasis on critical thinking beyond conventional educational boundaries, more families are turning to international schools. In a world that embraces diverse cultures and emerging technology, it is imperative for students to acquire the necessary skills for collaboration and innovation.

International schools serve as the educational homes for children from local backgrounds as well as various diverse nationalities, offering a rich exposure to different cultures. They create a classroom environment conducive to cross-cultural sharing, providing students with ample opportunities to develop, adapt, and become more versatile learners.

For expatriate families in transition, international schools offer numerous advantages, minimizing disruptions to students’ education while maintaining consistent educational environments. These schools typically conduct classes in English, with academic achievements recognized by universities globally. Some institutions provide boarding facilities, while others operate as day schools, and many incorporate pre-school programs.

Educational Programs Available

Chiang Mai’s international schools present several main educational programs, including the American/Advanced Placement (AP), British/A Level, and International Baccalaureate (IB). All these qualifications are globally recognized by major universities. Additionally, individual national curricula, such as Singaporean, Australian, Canadian, French, and German systems, are available in the city, albeit in fewer numbers but with equal benefit and value.

The selection of schools includes both non-profit and private institutions managed by independent organizations and global education groups. Despite their individual structures, all these schools focus on curriculums dedicated to the progression and development of learning, spanning from early years to pre-university levels. Many schools in Chiang Mai offer a combination of curricula in secondary/high school years, offering favorable circumstances for diverse educational pathways and broader choices for further education.

All schools prioritize local culture and values, integrating authentic experiences related to the developing world. They strike a balance between academics and performing/creative arts, music, STEM education, a wide range of sports, providing students with a varied and comprehensive learning pathway. Detailed insights into each major curriculum and their attributes are explored in our recently published edition of the International Schools guide.
