I’ve encountered numerous parents who’ve confessed to their children, “I didn’t enjoy science, so I can’t assist you,” or “You just have to endure it, and it’s not crucial unless you aspire to be a scientist,” or, even worse, “Girls typically aren’t very skilled at science anyway!” It’s essential to remember that our children are influenced not only by our actions but also by our words when it comes to their attitude toward any form of learning. You can encourage your children by highlighting the array of captivating careers rooted in science, ranging from aspiring astronauts to budding archaeologists. After all, which child wouldn’t relish the idea of unearthing dinosaur bones?
Children are born scientists with an innate curiosity that drives them to explore and discover the world around them. It’s our duty to not only recognize but also encourage and support this natural inclination, especially if they express an interest in pursuing a science-based career. I fondly recall the countless hours my children and I spent engrossed in “The Magic School Bus,” thanks to Miss Frizzle and her eccentric science experiments and adventures. Through this series, my kids became deeply engaged with the natural sciences, brimming with questions long before they even set foot in a classroom. I couldn’t help but think that, up until the age of 10, I had a future doctor and physicist on my hands!
